Manatee (Fla.) High wide receiver Ace Sanders made his decision official on Wednesday, signing with South Carolina, which earned his commitment last week.
Sanders was interested in South Florida before the Jim Leavitt firing. But he seemed happy with his decision Wednesday, flashing a grin while wearing a Gamecocks T-shirt and hat.
“South Carolina had a lot of stuff to offer,” he said. “The academic program is nice. ... People are friendly up there. It’s a small college town. ... During my visit, I thought, ‘This is the place I needed to be.’ ”
Sanders said Gamecocks’ head coach Steve Spurrier told him to expect to play as a freshman, and expect to do a bit of everything — receiving, rushing, returning kicks and punts — just as he did during his four-year run with the Hurricanes.
“That’s nice, because if you’re good at either one, you get recognition,” he said. “It’s real nice you can have all those options.”
It’s also nice, Sanders said, that the entire recruiting process is behind him.
“Trying to find out where you’re going to spend the next four years — that’s very hard,” he said. “You’ve got to do a lot of evaluating.”
