South Carolina practiced at Williams-Brice Stadium on Friday afternoon, and Steve Spurrier came away pleased with his offense.
Official stats were not kept, but in six series the offense mounted one 80-yard drive and came away with two touchdowns and a 48-yard field goal by Joey Scribner-Howard. Two other kickers had a chance from that distance. Spencer Lanning's attempt was short, and Jay Wooten missed left.
One touchdown came on a 50-yard pass from Stephen Garcia to D.L. Moore. Moore got behind Stephon Gilmore, and Garcia hit him in stride along the sideline. Brian Maddox scored on a 14-yard run.
Other big plays included a 36-yard reception by Maddox from Zac Brindise, and a 28-yard gain by Justice Cunningham on a pass from Connor Shaw. Shaw also added a 15-yard scramble.
"It seems like every time we put Zac in there, he does something pretty good," Spurrier said.
On four series started at the 10-yard line, the offense scored three times: Weslye Saunders caught a 15-yard pass from Shaw; Kenny Miles scored on a 2-yard run; and Maddox caught a 7-yard pass from Brindise to end the practice.
"We had a decent practice," Spurrier said. "The offense had a little movement here and there. All the quarterbacks did some good things. Garcia had a decent practice today."
Spurrier also lauded the play of the offensive line.
"I think the pass protection was very good," Spurrier said. "I think the protection one-on-one was a lot better, and the run blocking was fairly decent."
Many of the defensive players were held out, according to Spurrier. The only true defensive lineman available was Melvin Ingram. The big defensive play came when Brandan Davis intercepted Andrew Clifford.
Spring game schedule set
South Carolina will hold its Garnet and Black spring game a week from Saturday at 4 p.m.
Williams-Brice Stadium will open at 2:30 p.m., with a pregame awards ceremony beginning at 3:45 p.m.
Former Gamecock Eric Norwood will be honored for being the school's career leader in sacks.
According to Spurrier, the game will last 2 1/2 quarters with no halftime. "I believe that's all we've got players (for) right now," Spurrier said.
ETV lots will open at 8 a.m. and have approximately 800 spaces available for $10 each. The State Fairgrounds will open Gate 6 at 1 p.m. and have 4,000 spaces available for $10 each. USC's Key Road lot will open at noon with 600 free spaces available. Seawell's will have spaces available as well.
Jarvis Giles was held out of practice after sustaining a hip-flexor strain during Thursday's workout. He did agility drills at the beginning of practice then worked out with other injured players the remaining time. Spurrier expects him to be available next week ... Offensive lineman Ryan Broadhead sustained the only injury when he sprained his left knee ... The Gamecocks will conduct their final two practices before the spring game Tuesday and Wednesday at the Bluff Road practice facility. Both are set to start at 4 p.m. and will be open to the public.
