Recruiting: Harris jumps out to a quick start

GoGamecocks takes a look at how South Carolina’s recruits fared this weekend back home for their high school teams.

Mason Harris is not the biggest name in South Carolina’s 2011 recruiting class.

However, the defensive end from Ridgeland (Ga.) had a big start to his senior campaign Friday, leading the Panthers to a 30-19 victory against Adairsville.

Harris had nine tackles, including one for loss, two forced fumbles, a blocked extra point and a quarterback hurry in the win.

“Between his athleticism and his high motor, he just gives himself a chance to make plays,” Ridgeland coach Mark Mariakis said. “We played a good football team. They were big and strong, but his motor runs top end all the time. He never gives up on a play. With that type of attitude and athleticism, you’re going to have pretty good production every week.

“If we’re going to do what we need to do, he’s got to produce every week.”

Harris doesn’t mind that pressure.

“I can play better, but I should play at least that well every night,” he said. “My coaches told me I can’t get down when people are going away from my side. I think a lot of teams are going to do that, so I’m going to have to work harder to make tackles.”

Here is how USC’s other commitments fared:

K.J. Brent, WR, Marvin Ridge (N.C.): Brent had four catches for 79 yards and a touchdown in a 48-14 victory against Hickory Ridge (N.C.). Brent has seven catches for 139 yards in two games.

Martay Mattox, QB, Clarke Central (Ga.): Mattox passed for 173 yards in Clarke Central’s 41-12 victory against Cedar Shoals. Mattox finished 10-of-22 with three touchdowns and two interceptions. He rushed three times for 21 yards.

Brandon Wilds, RB, Blythewood: Wilds rushed seven times for 17 yards and caught two passes for six yards in a 25-7 loss to Fairfield Central. He has rushed for 55 yards on 25 carries and caught four passes for 47 yards this season.

Quincy McKinney, OL, Carver (Ga.): McKinney helped the team to a 63-0 victory against Spencer (Ga.).

Ronnie Martin, DB, Spartanburg: Martin’s statistics were not available from a 27-19 victory against Union.

Players that had byes were Angelo Watley (DE, Peachtree Ridge, Ga.), Lorenzo Mauldin (DE, Jackson, Ga.) and Edward Muldrow (OLB, South Gwinnett, Ga.)

The seasons for Kaleb Broome (OT, Georgia Military), Mike Matulis (OL, Park Vista, Fla.) Thomas Finnie (CB, Miami Central, Fla.) Jordan Montgomery (LB, South Lake, Fla.), Deon Green (DT, Olympia, Fla.) and Jared Henry (S, First Coast, Fla.) have not started.
