SC reacts to the president’s gun proposals

South Carolina has a strong pro-gun culture. And much of the reaction Wednesday to President Barack Obama’s proposals was negative. Some of those reactions:

‘Plans ... fail to address

the real issues’

“(T)the gun-control plans brought forward by President Obama fail to address the real issues, and I’m confident there will be bipartisan opposition to his proposal.

“One bullet in the hands of a homicidal maniac is one too many. But in the case of a young mother defending her children against a home invader — a real-life event which recently occurred near Atlanta — six bullets may not be enough. Criminals aren’t going to follow legislation limiting magazine capacity. However, a limit could put law-abiding citizens at a distinct disadvantage when confronting a criminal.

“As for reinstating the assault-weapons ban, it has already been tried and failed.

“Finally, when it comes to protecting our schools, I believe the best way to confront a homicidal maniac who enters a school is for them to be met by armed resistance from a trained professional.”

U.S. Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C.

Guns ‘integral part of

... sporting heritage’

“We do not condone criminal acts with guns. However, gun ownership, and appropriate and safe use of firearms is an integral part of Ducks Unlimited’s sporting heritage.”

Bill Short of Columbia, regional vice president of Ducks Unlimited

‘We don’t want any ban

on so-called assault weapons’

“Of course, we don’t want any ban on so-called assault weapons. To be perfectly honest, some of these weapons called assault rifles, like the AR-15, are used in competitions every weekend.”

Tom Thompson, president of the Mid-Carolina Rifle Club in Gaston, who said he opposes many of President Obama proposals but supports some. For example, the president requested states have incentives for sharing information in the background-check system, something gun advocates have long supported, Thompson said.
