Wintry mix likely to miss Midlands Friday

As the forecasts come into better focus, the weather conditions Friday in the Columbia area look less scary.

There’s a slim chance of freezing rain in the Columbia area Friday afternoon, and travel to the north and west of the Midlands could be treacherous.

A patch of wet air will move over the frigid air that settled over the state Thursday. For the Midlands, it appears the moisture won’t arrive until early afternoon, according to the National Weather Service. That means the moisture will hit the Midlands as temperatures are on the rise above freezing.

But the weather service has issued a winter weather advisory for central Georgia, where the moisture will hit earlier, and a winter weather advisory for colder portions of the Upstate South Carolina, including Oconee, Pickens, Greenville, Spartanburg, Union, Chester, York, Chesterfield and Lancaster counties. Periods of sleet or freezing rain are expected in those areas.

Accumulations of around a quarter of an inch are possible, leading to possible power outages from falling tree limbs.
