Columbia gets record rainfall Sunday [with updated numbers]

Not once in 135 years has it rained as much as it did Sunday at Columbia Metropolitan Airport, according to the National Weather Service station there.

Extraordinary rainfall totals stretched from the Midlands to the coast during the weekend.

Columbia Metropolitan Airport got 2.29 inches of rain during the weekend, while Charleston's airport got 3.45. The Sunday rainfall of 3.0 inches in Charleston and 1.57 inches in Columbia set a daily record for March 24.

Several observers in the Community Collaborative Rain, Hail and Snow Network in Beaufort, Hampton, Charleston, Dorchester and Berkeley counties reported more than three inches, topped by 5.36 inches at one site in Charleston County.

The state should have a chance to dry out this week. No rain is in the forecast for the next four days. Windy conditions - 30 mph sustained winds, gusts to 40 mph in the Midlands - should speed the drying.
