USC Tuesday picked up a commitment from linebacker Quin Smith (6-foot-1, 208 pounds) of Lenoir, N.C. Smith attended a camp at USC Monday and contacted his recruiter, Ray Rychleski, Tuesday with his pledge. Smith plays running back and defensive back in high school but is projected as a linebacker in college. He also has an offer from East Carolina and is getting interest from Duke and Wake Forest. He’s the fifth commitment for the Gamecocks’ 2009 class.
Calhoun County WR commits to Southern Cal. Southern Cal has been the favorite of wide receiver Alshon Jeffrey (6-3, 217) of Calhoun County for some time, and Monday night Jeffrey cemented those feelings by committing to Trojans coach Pete Carroll.
“A year ago I asked him if he had a choice of where he wanted to go, and he said Southern Cal,” said Calhoun County coach Walter Wilson. “Southern Cal is his dream school. It’s very rare that your dream becomes reality. He doesn’t get excited much, but he was excited Monday. Some people may be upset with his decision, but it’s the kids choice. He has to do what he feels is right for him. As a coach, it’s not my job to sway him one way or another.”
Jeffrey also has offers from USC, Clemson, Alabama, Kentucky, North Carolina, Tennessee, NC State, Florida, Florida State, Michigan, and Oregon. He will visit Southern Cal June 24. The Trojans had recruited Jeffrey strongly for several months. Their receivers coach visited Calhoun County in the spring and left with Jeffrey number one on his list of the six receivers he was recruiting.
After getting his transcript at the end of the school year and seeing that he was good to go academically, the Trojans made their final push. Jeffrey called Carroll Monday night to make his decision official.
