Former South Carolina defensive end Casper Brinkley was among those cut Monday by the NFL's Carolina Panthers.
Also cut were quarterback Lester Ricard, cornerback Curtis DeLoatch of N.C. A&T and tight end Chris Conklin of Wingate.
The Panthers suffered their first prominent season-ending injury of the preseason when tests showed that promising wide receiver Jason Carter suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament in the fourth quarter against Washington Saturday.
He was placed on injured reserve and counts as one of the five roster cuts the team was required to make by Tuesday.
The Panthers' roster now is at 75. Final cuts come Saturday.
