Wide receiver Lamar Scruggs (6-4 212) of Jacksonville, Fla., commmitted this afternoon to USC, according to his coach Joe Reynolds. Scruggs made the commitment after meeting with USC head coach Steve Spurrier and receivers coach Steve Spurrier Jr.
According to Reynolds, USC was in great shape with Scruggs throughout the recruiting process.
"They got in on him a couple of years ago and they offered him early," he said. "They sort of held their ground. When he didn't accept the Florida offer last spring, I thought he would be going to South Carolina. He always wanted to be a Gator. He always wanted to play for coach Spurrier."
Last season Scruggs caught 46 passes for 741 yards and 9 touchdowns.
"He's such a great possession receiver with good speed," Reynolds said. "He's got too many good things going for him not to fit into anybody's offense."
Scruggs picked USC over Ole Miss and Illinois. Coaches from those two schools are scheduled to visit him tonight and tomorrow. Reynolds said they were informed of the commitment, but he's not sure if they will cancel the visits.
Scruggs had nearly 60 offers including Florida, Georgia Tech, LSU and Miami. He becomes the 26th commitment for the Gamecocks.
