The Gamecocks are expecting around 75 prospects Saturday for junior day, including one of its top quarterback targets.
Connor Shaw (6-2 198) of Flowery Branch, Ga., is a multi-faceted quarterback who operates a West Virginia style offense. Shaw is the brother of Georgia Tech quarterback Jaybo Shaw.
"He's a really good athlete," said his father and head coach Lee Shaw. "He was all-state as a receiver as a sophomore. He he has a 35-inch vertical. He has great quickness and good strength. He has the ability to make a play, and he has great arm strength.
"His decision-making is where it needs to be. If he scrambles, he's able to get his eyes downfield. He's looking for the quick strike down the field first."
Never miss a local story.
Last season Shaw completed 141 of 214 passes for 2,200 yards 22 touchdowns and 6 interceptions. He also rushed for 946 yards and 10 scores.
Some of the other players who have said they will visit for South Carolina's junior day are running back Marcus Lattimore of Byrnes, linebacker Justin Parker of Beaufort, offensive lineman Eric Mack of Calhoun County, offensive lineman AJ Cann, defensive lineman Kolton Houston, defensive end Mychal Brown of Columbia and offensive lineman Max Garcia of Norcross, Ga.
Connor Shaw has offers from USC, Georgia Tech, Stanford, West Virginia, Wake Forest and Central Florida. He's also hearing from Georgia, UCLA and Oregon.
Coach Shaw said USC's interest in his son is very strong.
"Coach Spurrier came here specifically to tell me he wants Connor to come play quarterback for him. You get coach Spurrier's stamp, you feel pretty good about playing quarterback. South Carolina, Georgia Tech and West Virginia, I would imagine, are the top three out of those who have offered.
"We run the West Virginia offense. Our passing attack is Texas Tech and our running attack is West Virginia with a little bit of Georgia Tech if we're up underneath. We're a triple-option zone read team out of the gun and throw all the routes Texas Tech throws."
Shaw and his father will attend USC's junior day Saturday. He has been to Georgia Tech for junior day and will go to Wake Forest. Georgia called him Thursday and also invited him in.
"He wants to take some junior day visits and some unofficial visits in the smmer and make a decision late in the summer before his season," Coach Shaw said.
