South Carolina offensive tackle Jamon Meredith was taken Sunday in the fifth round of the NFL Draft by the Green Bay Packers.
Meredith was taken 26th in the round and 162nd overall.
The Simpsonville native has good athleticism for his size. Draft analysts had projected that the 6-foot-5, 304-pounder from Simpsonville would be selected in the third or fourth round.
He played guard most of his senior season, which to some showed his versatility, while others might have questioned why USC didn't leave him at the critical left tackle spot. (Meredith sat out the first two games while under NCAA suspension because of an infraction that was not his fault. Gamecocks coaches preferred not to move Jarriel King, who replaced Meredith at left tackle.)
Meredith was one of the better students on the USC football team, receiving the team award for best grade-point average last year and graduating in May 2008.
