USC football recruit RB Ben Axon of Bradenton, FL was not accepted by the university and will not play for the Gamecocks USC head coach Steve Spurrier announced Sunday. Spurrier said there has been no ruling from the NCAA Clearinghouse yet on defensive lineman Leon Mackey.
Axon was arrested earlier in the summer and charged with felony possession of marijuana. The charge later was reduced to a misdemeanor and he entered a pre-trial diversion program in Florida. Spurrier said at the time Axon would be allowed to join the team if accepted into school. Spurrier said he did not know where Axon will enroll.
Axon is the fifth member of the USC's 2009 class not to make it to school this semester. DE Duane Chisolm and WR Charles Holmes are headed to junior college, DB Chris Payne is going to prep school, and running back Matt Coffee will enroll in January. That means 24 newcomers out of the 29 signed in February are in school now.
