Post-scrimmage reportAll that extra throwing must have paid off.
South Carolina’s quarterbacks had a strong showing in the team’s first full-scale scrimmage Tuesday, a closed workout at Williams-Brice Stadium.
The top three quarterbacks combined to complete 22 of 35 passes for 309 yards and five touchdowns. They did not throw an interception.
Stephen Garcia, whose first week was marred by inconsistency, led the way by going 11-of-15 for 165 yards and three touchdowns. But Reid McCollum and Aramis Hillary posted solid numbers, as well (see stats below).
Never miss a local story.
Tori Gurley, one of the stars of the spring, was on the receiving end of two of the touchdown passes. The 6-5, 227-pound Gurley, whose name was not mentioned much during the first week of camp, hauled in an 18-yard score from Garcia and an 11-yard strike from McCollum.
Wideout Joe Hills, held out of Monday’s practice for disciplinary reasons, had two catches for 53 yards and a TD. And Bryce Sherman, the Little Walk-on That Could, continued his impressive camp by running times for a team-high 52 yards.
There was one injury: Freshman defensive lineman Ronald Byrd hurt his knee rushing the quarterback. Steve Spurrier said the training staff believes Byrd tore his ACL, an injury that likely would end his season.
