Placekicker Jay Wooten (6-3 185) of Laurinburg, N.C., has decided to transfer from North Carolina to USC.
He also considered Arkansas and drew interest from Louisville and Coastal Carolina.
"I never made it to Arkansas (for a visit) but I did go down to Columbia with my parents and met with Coach (Steve) Spurrier and Coach (Shane) Beamer," said Wooten. "It just felt right. Both my parents went to USC and I always wanted to be a Gamecock."
Wooten says the timing was not right out of high school, but things have really worked out.
Never miss a local story.
"It's funny because it was not a good situation back then," he said. "They didn't really need a kicker and I was excited about playing at North Carolina. Things didn't work out. They wanted me to concentrate more on kickoffs."
Wooten says he grew up going to USC home football games.
"I don't care what anyone says," he said. "There isn't a more exciting place to be on Saturdays than Williams-Brice."
He also knows a couple of current Gamecocks. "Byron McKnight and Travian Robertson went to middle school with me. We still talk on the computer."
Wooten will sit out this season and have three years to play two. He is coming to USC as a walk-on with the opportunity to earn a scholarship. Last season he was 4-6 on field goal attempts and made all 11 PATs.
