The West Columbia Police Department has arrested one individual in Friday morning’s series of shooting incidents on Meeting Street. Warrants have been issued for a second subject.
Chief Dennis Tyndall said officers on Friday night arrested Tommy Lee McKnight II, 21, of 140 Century Drive. He is charged with two counts of assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature, criminal conspiracy and discharging a firearm in the city. He is being held at the Lexington County Detention Center on $28,000 bond.
Police have issued warrants for a second suspect in the Friday morning incidents. Daledreck Remel Carpenter, Jr., 17, of 140 Century Drive, faces the same charges as McKnight.
"It appears that these individuals had no connection to any of the victims. They were simply passing through the city and decided to shoot at people they passed on the street," Chief Tyndall said. "We have been able to determine that the gun they fired was a CO2 cannister-style BB gun and it is now in our possession. While the weapon was not a traditional firearm, it was still capable of inflicting serious injury to the victims and appeared to anyone to be a firearm."
