Events: Arbor Day is an annual event to encourage tree planting and care. It's typically held in late April, although some states - including South Carolina - move the observance to coincide with better tree-planting times, according to the Arbor Day Foundation.
Arbor Day in the Palmetto State is the first Friday in December -Dec. 4 this year.
Schools and other organizations often plan events. The city of Columbia, for example, partners with a school for tree-plantings and education. This year, it's at Logan Elementary.
Programs: Among noteworthy programs is the city of Columbia's Treasured Trees, whose goal is to document and preserve trees with significance in the Columbia-Lexington area. A new batch of trees selected for the program is expected in the coming weeks. For other details about the program, go to www.columbiasc.net/forestry/243
