Marion County Democratic Party chairman Lee Walter Jenkins said Tuesday that he will run for chairman of the S.C. Democratic Party.
Jenkins is the first candidate to announce plans to run for the seat currently held by Carol Fowler of Columbia. Fowler has said she would not seek another term.
However, others are expected to seek the post as well.
The victor faces a lengthy rebuilding job.
Never miss a local story.
Once South Carolina’s dominant political party, Democrats lost one of two S.C. congressional seats they hold in November. They also lost the last statewide elected post that they held, state superintendent of education.
Democrats lost control of the state Senate early last decade and the S.C. House in the 1990s. A Democrat has not been elected governor of South Carolina since 1998.
