A small, single engine plane crashed through some pine trees in Kershaw County off I-20 Friday afternoon and exploded, killing the pilot and igniting a small woods fire, Kershaw County Sheriff Jim Matthews said.
Witnesses described the plane as moving up and down “like a boat on the waves” before crashing into the woods off Larry Jeffers Road, Matthews said. Larry Jeffers Road is off of White Pond Road, the second exit off of I-20 east once you enter Kershaw County from Richland County.
Matthews said the plane is destroyed, preventing officials from identifying it by its tail number. Kershaw County officials have notified the Federal Aviation Administration, which investigates all plane crashes. Johnny Fellers, the county coroner, is also at the scene of the crash.
The fire department quickly extinguished the woods fire, Matthews said.
