A candidate for chairman of the South Carolina Democratic Party todaycalled on one of his opponents to withdraw from the race because he hasdonated at least $15,700 to Republican candidates since 1996.
Phil Noble, a Charleston resident and president of S.C. New Democrats, said former party chairman Dick Harpootlian should disqualify himself asa chairman candidate.
Harpootlian has donated to a number of Republicans, including Midlandslawmakers Sen. Jake Knotts, R-Lexington, and former Rep. Bill Cotty,R-Richland. Both were facing primary challenges from more conservativeRepublicans.
Records show Harpootlian also donated to former Attorney General HenryMcMaster and Secretary of State Mark Hammond.
"Many Democrats around the state think of our party -- their party -- asbeing run by a club of well-meaning insiders in Columbia without a clearstrategy for winning or even moving forward ... they have great soundbites for the media and put clever things on their websites, but in theevening it's back to the politics of you-scratch-my back-I'll-scratchyours," Noble said in a statement.
"In public, he gives them hell," Noble said of Harpootlian's often sharpcriticism of Republicans. "In private, he gives them money."
