South Carolina ranks No. 8 among states in the number of tornadoes per square mile, according to a new study by The Weather Channel.
The network’s tornado expert Greg Forbes divided the number of confirmed tornadoes from 1950-2010 in each state by the size of the state.
Florida ranks No. 1 with 12.3 tornadoes per 10,000 square mile. South Carolina is 8th at 8.9.
The large Midwest tornado alley states get the more deadly twisters (S.C. has only 60 tornado deaths in 60 years), but the smaller hurricane- and tornado-spawned tornadoes add up in coastal states such as Florida, South Carolina, No. 3 Maryland, No. 9 Alabama and No. 10 Louisiana.
