DISH ON A NEW DISH
Move over, barbecue debaters: Charlotte may have a new Southern specialty. While plenty of barbecue is on the menus at Democratic National Convention delegate parties, another dish is also popular: shrimp and grits.
Caterers are serving appetizer versions in cocktail glasses and hot-bar versions with multiple toppings.
Why is a Lowcountry dish associated with Charleston being featured in Charlotte? Apparently, visitors from other states are expected to think it’s exotic.
“What is Charlotte known for?” said caterer Dave Byron, who will serve stone-ground grits topped with seared shrimp and house-cured bacon at the party at the Daniel Stowe Botanical Garden.
“A lot of folks tag us as a barbecue place. And you know what? Our shrimp and grits are really good.”
