Tybee Island officials confirmed that a Drug Enforcement Agency operation took place on the island on Friday, WTOC reports.
The operation was conducted with the support of multiple law enforcement agencies, among them the Tybee Island Police Department, according to WTOC.
The event was witnessed by neighbors, according to WTOC, who saw law enforcement agents enter a vacation home on the island.
A neighbor expressed fears on Facebook of harmful fumes or runoff from the property threatening them or others in the neighborhood. This is due to signs posted on the home by officials and reported on by WTOC, one of which reads:
“WARNING: A clandestine laboratory for the manufacture of illegal drugs and/or hazardous chemicals was seized at the location on ____. Known hazardous chemicals have been disposed of pursuant to law. However, there still may be hazardous substances or waste products on this property, either in buildings or in the ground itself. Please exercise caution while on these premises.”

An unnamed DEA employee said that no further information about the operation would be available through the agency until Monday in a phone conversation Saturday afternoon.
