USC edged Virginia Tech 77-76 at the Carolina Coliseum.
The third-ranked Gamecock hoopsters were riding high, but the outmanned Hokies gave them a big scare. With only 1:08 left to play, USC’s Kevin Joyce sank two free throws to give Carolina a 77-73 lead. But, the Hokies weren’t done as they closed the gap to only one point after a basket and a free throw with 0:23 left.
A subsequent USC turnover gave VPI one last chance with 0:11 left. The sellout crowd of 12,516 held their breath and watched as the last second shot by center Charles Lipscomb just missed off the back rim, and the Gamecocks were 4-0 to start the year.
Joyce led the Gamecocks in scoring in this game with 21 points.
