The ninth-ranked Gamecocks fell to seventh-ranked LSU 30-13 in the Gator Bowl in Jacksonville, Florida.
A huge crowd of 82,119 was on hand, and they saw LSU receiver Wendell Davis put on a show. Davis and LSU jumped on Carolina quickly, as he and QB Tommy Hodson hooked up for two TDs (39 and 12 yds.) in the first five minutes of the game.
The Gamecocks were never able to recover.
LSU led 20-6 at halftime, and built it to 27-6 early in the third. Carolina got into end zone early in the fourth quarter on a ten-yard run by Harold Green, making the score 27-13, but could get no closer.
Although the bowl game was a disappointment, this Gamecock squad will go down as one of the best in school history. They scored an average of 28 PPG, while allowing only 11.
