It was a huge day in Columbia, as the University of South Carolina plays its first official SEC basketball conference game.
It was made even more special by the fact that it was the Kentucky Wildcats who were in town. Jeff Roulston had the honors as the first jump ball went up.
The jacked-up crowd saw their Gamecocks hit eight of their first nine shots and race out to an early 13 point lead. However, the star-studded Wildcats led by Coach Rick Pitino proved to be too much for Steve Newton’s team, as they came back to defeat the Gamecocks 80-63.
Despite the defeat, it was a special day. Carolina had competed in the great Southeastern Conference.
