It was a very exciting night in Columbia as the Gamecocks hosted the 12-0 and seventh-ranked Syracuse Orangemen. The game lived up to its billing. Despite a tremendous effort by the outmanned Gamecocks, they fell 77-74 in overtime. It was the free throw line that ultimately cost Carolina in this one. USC was only 11-of-24 from the stripe, despite shooting a hot 56% from the floor.
Carolina held a 51-44 lead with seven minutes left in regulation, but couldn’t hold on. Antonio Grant’s follow up of a missed free throw with 20 seconds left sent the game into overtime. Unfortunately, a desperation half-court heave by Herbert Lee Davis to tie it at the buzzer in overtime banged harmlessly off the backboard. Freshman Chuck Eidson introduced himself to Carolina’s biggest crowd of the season with a 16-point effort.
