Carolina attempted an astounding 43 free throws, making 34 of them, in route to a 73-69 Metro Conference victory over the Cincinnati Bearcats in Frank McGuire Arena.
Carolina’s lead was cut to only two at 69-67 late, but freshman forward Joe Rhett rattled home a baseline jumper with only 0:37 remaining to secure the hard-fought Metro victory.
Terry Dozier led the way for the Gamecocks with 17 points. Barry Manning and John Hudson each chipped in with 16 of their own.
George Felton’s team had a good year, posting a 19-11 record. They also made their first NCAA Tournament appearance in 15 years.
