In what turned out to be a great game between the rivals, Carolina squeezed by Clemson 65-64, in a game not decided until the final buzzer.
Clemson led 64-61 after Tiger great Horace Grant made one of two free throws with 1:21 left. A Duane Kendall basket and a defensive stop gave Carolina a chance to take the lead in the closing seconds.
As the clock wound down, Keith James’ jumpshot missed the mark, but was rebounded by Woody Moye for USC. Moye’s put back went in, but the officials ruled that he was fouled before the shot. With only eight seconds remaining and Carolina down by one point, Moye calmly sank two free throws giving USC the lead by one. A shot by Clemson’s Grayson Marshall and a tip in try both rimmed out as the buzzer sounded to end the game.
Gamecock point guard Michael Foster led the way for Carolina with a 20-point performance.
