The Gamecocks earned their ninth-straight victory in heart-stopping fashion as they edged Vanderbilt 65-64 in Nashville.
The 25th-ranked team had become known as the “Cardiac Kids” as they continued to find ways to win tight games at the end.
This game was especially tense as Melvin Watson hit an off-balance baseline jumper with only 16.7 seconds left to put Carolina ahead by one. The Commodores missed a pair of potential game-winning shots in the final seconds.
It was not a pretty win, but a win none the less, as Carolina survived a season-high 23 turnovers. The Gamecocks ran their record to an improbable 8-0 in the SEC, equaling their highest conference win total since joining in 1992.
Never miss a local story.
Senior guard Larry Davis had a nice game, tossing in 18 points to lead USC.
