In what was termed as the “Miracle at McGuire,” 13th-ranked Carolina overcame a 23-point second-half deficit to defeat 18th-ranked Cincinnati 67-65. Antonio Grant’s 25-foot, 3-point prayer at the buzzer gave USC its only lead of the game.
The Gamecocks trailed 42-19 at the 19:18 mark of the second half when they began the miraculous comeback.
USC began to chip away at the lead, with PG Melvin Watson leading the charge with 17 second-half points. The lead was cut to one with 5.2 seconds left, and Watson took a charge in the lane giving Carolina a last shot. After a timeout, the ball was inbounded to BJ McKie near the midcourt line.
As McKie began to stumble, he tossed the ball over to Grant, who heaved up the miraculous winning shot.
