The Gamecocks pulled off a big upset, as they took down third-ranked Kentucky 73-61 at the Colonial Center.
Carolina played solid defense throughout this game. They forced numerous turnovers and built a 12-point second half lead. However, the talented Wildcats weren’t done, as they trimmed the USC lead to five with 6:43 to play.
However, that’s when senior Carlos Powell made his presence known. Powell scored 11 of his 14 points from that point on, pushing the Gamecocks to the big victory. Carolina forced 21 UK turnovers, and held the ‘Cats to only 35% shooting for the game.
Powell and his teammates went on to win the first of their back-to-back NIT Championships. USC defeated St. Josephs to claim to title.
