Carolina stunned the seventh-ranked Notre Dame Fighting Irish 65-60 in Columbia.
This game, matching coaching legends Frank McGuire and Digger Phelps, was a see-saw battle until Mike Doyle’s basket gave USC the lead for good with 9:35 left. The Irish kept the pressure on however, cutting the lead to only one with 1:33 remaining. USCs Kenny Reynolds and Kevin Dunleavy converted late pressure-packed free throws to kill any hopes of an Irish comeback.
Guard Jackie Gilloon led the way for the Gamecocks with 15 points, despite fouling out late in the second half. Forward Golie Augustus chipped in with 13 points as well.
