It’s always nice to knock off the #1 ranked team in the country, but it’s even sweeter when that team is the Clemson Tigers. Indeed, the 8th-ranked Gamecocks defeated the top-ranked Tigers 8-6 at Doug Kingsmore Stadium in front of 5,273 raucous fans.
Freshman pitcher Aaron Rawl picked up his first career victory, pitching in a relief role.
Rawl and closer Blake Taylor combined to hold Clemson to only one run over the final 5 1/3 innings.
USC took the lead for good (7-5) in the fifth inning after a disputed safe/out call on Drew Meyer opened the door for Steve Thomas to rip a go-ahead two-run double. Thomas was the hitting hero, as he had already homered back in the first inning. Third baseman Brian Buscher also homered in the game for Carolina, as did Clemson star SS Khalil Greene, who hit his off of Rawl in the sixth.
