The largest crowd ever at Sarge Frye Field (6,307) was on hand for this much-anticipated showdown between No. 1 ranked Carolina and No. 9 Clemson. Yes, the Gamecocks entered this contest as the top-ranked team in the country, and the game lived up to its billing. Carolina came away with a heart-stopping 9-8 victory in the 12th inning.
The Gamecocks had to fight from behind twice in this game. Clemson led 7-3 in the eighth inning when USC began its first comeback. Chris Plummer’s two-out HR in the eighth brought the Gamecocks to within two. Then, in the ninth, Trey Dyson connected on a dramatic two-run homer with two outs to send the game into extra innings.
Clemson took an 8-7 lead in the 11th, only to see Dyson strike again with a game-tying double in the bottom of the 11th inning. USC’s Marcos Rios finally ended this epic battle with a game-winning single in the 12th inning.
The win improved Carolina’s record to an astounding 38-4 on the season.
