Carolina defeated Texas Tech 78-70 in Wichita to advance to the sweet sixteen of the NCAA Tournament. It was the third-straight year that USC had made the sweet sixteen.
South Carolina and Southwest Conference champion Texas Tech played to a 30-30 stalemate in the first half. In the second half, the lead went back-and-forth, with neither team leading by more than five until a 28-13 run gave USC a 74-64 lead with two minutes left. The Raiders got no closer than eight the rest of the way.
Kevin Joyce led four USC players in double figures with 21 points. Danny Traylor, Alex English, and Mike Dunleavy also hit double-figures.
