Carolina moved on to the sweet sixteen, as they edged Temple 53-51 in the first round of the NCAA Tournament in Williamsburg, Virginia.
This exciting contest came down to the final seconds tied at 51. Carolina called timeout with 0:40 left, and decided to pursue the McGuire trademark of holding for the last shot. As the clock ran down, great perimeter shooter Kevin Joyce used a screen to get loose and calmly sank a top-of-the-key jumper, giving USC the victory.
Tom Riker led the hot-shooting Gamecocks (51 percent) with 23 points. Danny Traylor led the on the boards with 10.
This was the first year of competition as an independent for USC. They had a great year, posting a regular season record of 23-3.
