The Gamecocks blew away LSU 85-64 in the SEC Tournament, leaving little doubt that the team would be headed to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in six years. Carolina ran its record to 23-9 on the season with its second win in the SEC Tournament.
The 21-point win was amazing, considering that USC trailed by 15 with 7:49 left in the first half.
The Gamecock offense was in high gear, hitting 58% of its shots, including a scorching 57% from behind the arc. Steady senior guard Mike Boynton led the shooting parade. He made six three-pointers to account for his team-high 18 points. Tarence Kinsey and Josh Gonner contributed 14 points each to the cause.
Indeed, the Gamecocks received an NCAA bid in ’04. They were bracketed as a ten-seed vs. Memphis in round one, a rematch of the NIT championship game from two years earlier.
