South Carolina claims its only ACC Tournament championship, defeating North Carolina 52-51. This was one of the greatest games in ACC history! It is still talked about and discussed forty years later.
To set the stage, UNC led by seven, 42-35, with six minutes left to play. USC then went on an 11-4 run, tying the game at 46 after three straight John Roche baskets. A George Karl free throw gave the Heels a 49-46 lead with 1:19 left to play.
With time running down, and UNC clinging to a 51-50 lead, Karl missed a one-and-one free throw setting up a fantastic finish. The Gamecocks had one last shot. Kevin Joyce drove the baseline, but was tied up by Lee Dedmon, forcing a jump ball with five seconds left. Amazingly, Joyce was able to control the tip against the much taller Dedmon.
The ball went into the hands of Tom Owens who laid it in at the buzzer, giving USC its most memorable basketball victory.
