New York Yankees World Series hero Bobby Richardson stepped into the Gamecocks dugout as coach for the first time.
It was an exciting day in Columbia as Sumter native Richardson began his very successful tenure as USC’s skipper against the Furman Paladins. Although the Paladins came out on top in this one by a score of 8-1, it didn’t take long for Richardson to turn Carolina into a baseball power. His first year was a struggle, as the team posted a record of 14-20.
However, his seven year record at Carolina was 220-91-2, including a trip to the College World Series championship game.
