A sellout crowd was on hand to witness the first SEC contest at the new Carolina Stadium. It was the traditionally strong LSU Tigers who were in town, adding even more excitement to the night.
Sam Dyson took the mound for Carolina, and he tossed a great game, keeping the fifth-ranked Tigers in check all night. Dyson allowed only one run on two hits in seven strong innings. USC backed Dyson’s strong effort with HRs by Jackie Bradley, Bobby Haney, Whit Merrifield, and Andrew Crisp in defeating LSU 7-3.
It was an impressive win for Carolina, especially considering that LSU would go on to claim the 2009 National Championship in Omaha.
