Carolina met up with Memphis in the NCAA Tournament’s first-round at Kemper Arena in Kansas City. The tenth-seeded Gamecocks were making their first appearance in the Tournament in six years.
Unfortunately, USC picked a bad time to post a season-low point total in a 59-43 setback. The Gamecocks struggled against the Memphis man-to-man defense right out of the gate, shooting 35.7 percent in the game. Memphis held a 30-18 halftime advantage, and never trailed by less than ten in the second half.
Carlos Powell was the only Gamecock to reach double figure scoring, collecting 11 points.
Overall, it was a good year for the Gamecocks despite the setback.
Dave Odom, in his second year at USC, guided the team to a 23-11 record.
