First-year coach Ray Tanner faced off against Clemson for the first time as Gamecocks’ coach, and ended Clemson’s 25-game home winning streak with an 11-3 clubbing of the 17th ranked Tigers. Ironically, Tanner’s NC State team was the last to defeat Clemson at Doug Kingsmore Stadium before the streak a year earlier.
Carolina posted three runs in the second and third innings to build an early 6-2 lead. The Gamecocks then had to survive numerous Clemson rallies. The Tigers loaded the bases four times, but came away with only one run. Clemson left a season-high 15 men on base. USC relievers Jake Whitfield and Chad Hoshour were outstanding, allowing only one run on four hits in their five innings of work.
