Carolina won a tough extra-inning affair at Clemson by a score of 9-4, after exploding for five runs in the top of the twelfth inning.
Gamecock freshman starting pitcher Dave Menhart pitched like a seasoned veteran. Menhart kept Clemson in check, pitching an amazing 9 1/3 innings before leaving the game.
The big bat in this game for Carolina belonged to left fielder Charlie Aldrich.
Aldrich went 3 for 5 with four RBIs, including a three-run first inning homer to move USC ahead early. Center fielder Jeff Morris collected three hits as well, driving in a couple of runs. The 1986 team finished with a fine 43-23 record, advancing to the NCAA Tournament’s Atlantic Region in Coral Gables, Florida.
