Darlene Lowery’s memorable no-hitter lifted the USC softball team to a 3-0 win over Central Michigan, and earned Carolina a trip to the Women’s College World Series. The win gave USC a 2-games-to-1 series victory in the NCAA Tournament regional held in Columbia.
If a no-hitter in the NCAA Tournament is not already a great accomplishment, consider that Darlene pitched the game with a torn tendon in her hand, sustained in game two of the best-of-three series. Also, she very nearly had a perfect game, as only one CMU player reached base, and that was via an error.
Darlene set many records at Carolina, playing from 1983-1987. The most impressive is probably the one for the lowest career ERA, a miniscule 0.38.
