It was an exciting day in town as Carolina hosted the NCAA Atlantic Regional, and faced the Virginia Tech Hokies in the opening game.
The fans weren’t disappointed as USC edged the Gobblers 7-6, in a 10-inning nail-biter.
Mark Van Bever started the winning rally for Carolina in the 10th with a single. He advanced to second on a passed ball, and to third on a sacrifice bunt. The Hokies intentionally walked Steve King. Then, a big mistake was made by the VPI catcher, who made an errant throw to second base on a steal attempt, allowing Van Bever to score the winning run from third.
The exciting win by Carolina set up a huge winner’s bracket showdown with arch-rival Clemson, who defeated Furman 13-2.
