Ryan Bordenik’s dramatic grand-slam homer in the bottom of the ninth lifted Carolina to one of its most memorable comeback victories ever. The walk-off blast brought USC back from a six-run deficit to defeat Texas Tech 9-8 in the NCAA Tournament’s Atlantic I Regional, played in Coral Gables, Florida.
The Gamecocks had put themselves in a big hole, trailing the Red Raiders 8-2 after seven innings. However, Carolina then stunned Texas Tech with a pair of staggering blows. Freshman Clint Collins hit a three-run homer in the eighth, setting the stage for Bordenik’s towering grand-slam over the right-field fence one inning later.
“It was definitely storybook,” Coach Ray Tanner said following the game. The win put Carolina in a great position as the only undefeated team remaining in the regional, one win away from Omaha.
