The Gamecocks earned their third trip to Omaha and the College World Series after an 11-5 victory over Memphis State. USC swept through the East Regional, held in Columbia, defeating Temple and Memphis St. twice.
All-American Rob Lowery, Chris Boyle, Robby Vollmer, and Jamey Thaw all homered for USC in a big 15-hit attack. Carolina scored four in the second inning and two in the third. Lowery’s big fly in the fourth pushed the lead up to 8-2, and Carolina cruised the rest of the way.
The victory went to starting pitcher Don Gordon. Gordon wasn’t overpowering, allowing 4 runs on 15 hits in the complete game effort. He was sharp enough however to earn his eighth victory on the season, and send the Gamecocks on to Omaha, where they would meet Oklahoma St. in the opening game.
