The top-ranked Gamecocks advanced on to the super-regionals with an 8-4 come-from-behind, region-clinching victory over Wake Forest in Columbia.
Carolina fell behind early in this one 3-0 after two Demon Deacon first inning, wind-aided home runs off starter Scott Barber (9-1). It was familiar territory for USC though, as they had collected 19 comeback victories on the season already. After scoring a pair of third inning runs, USC took the lead for good in the fifth on a two-run flare single to right by DH Marcos Rios. Rios added a home run in the seventh, going back-to-back with catcher Brandon Pack to essentially end the hopes of the Demon Deacons.
Carolina, now an impressive 55-8 on the season, was set to meet the Rajun Cajuns’ of Louisiana-Lafayette in the super-regional with a trip to Omaha on the line in the best-of-three series.
