Carolina advanced on to the super-regionals by defeating Evansville 5-1, thus taking the Charlottesville Regional of the NCAA Tournament.
Wynn Pelzer was the big cog for the Gamecocks, pitching a complete game, nine strikeout, no walk masterpiece. Pelzer had been a do-it-all pitcher for USC during the season. He had worked as a starter, reliever, and closer.
The region’s outstanding player, Phil Disher, hit his third home run in as many days, a 3-run shot, giving Pelzer the early lead to work with. That’s all Wynn would need.
Carolina (40-23) was now set to meet SEC-rival Georgia in a super-regional showdown in Athens the following weekend. A win there would put Carolina in the College World Series for the fourth time in five years.
