USC football star Alex Hawkins was born on this date in Welsh, West Virginia.
He attended South Charleston (WV) High school, and played at South Carolina from 1956-1958.
Hawkins capped off a nice career at Carolina by being recognized as the ACC’s Player of the Year in 1958. He rushed for 450 yards, and added 133 receiving in the all-star campaign. He rushed for career high of 129 yards vs. Furman on November 3, 1956.
Alex moved on to the NFL in 1959, and had a very nice 10-year career, playing for the Baltimore Colts and Atlanta Falcons. He was a multi-purpose athlete, playing both flanker and halfback. Hawkins accumulated some nice stats in the NFL. He caught 129 passes for 1,751 yards and 12 TDs, while also posting 787 yards on 208 rushing attempts and ten TDs carrying the pigskin.Hawkins was inducted into the USC Athletic Hall-of-Fame in 1970.
